Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about respite care, consultations, and what to expect.
The intake form helps me prepare to provide the best possible care for your loved one. By learning about their needs, routines, communication style, and any triggers in advance, I can create a safe, comfortable environment from the first session. It also ensures I have critical information like medications, allergies, and emergency contacts on hand.
Trust is everything when it comes to care. I want you to feel completely confident before you leave your loved one with me, and the only way to build that trust is to meet face-to-face. During the consultation, we'll discuss your family's specific needs, I'll answer all your questions, and you can get a sense of whether we're the right fit. There's no pressure—just an honest conversation about how I can support your family.
Respite care hours are flexible and tailored to your family's needs. While in-person consultations are scheduled weekdays 9AM-3PM, actual care sessions can be arranged based on when you need support—whether that's during the day, evening, or weekends. We'll discuss your specific scheduling needs during our consultation to find what works best for your family.
I have 20 years of hands-on experience working with children, teens, and adults with autism, developmental delays, and complex behavioral needs. I'm First Aid and CPR certified with a current Criminal Record Check. Beyond credentials, I bring patience, adaptability, and a genuine commitment to treating every individual with dignity and respect. I've seen challenging behaviors, non-verbal communication, sensory sensitivities—and I approach each situation with calm understanding, not judgment.
I provide care for individuals ages 5-30 years old. Whether your child is in elementary school or your adult son or daughter needs support, I have experience across the full age spectrum. Care is personalized to each individual's developmental stage, interests, and needs.
Care location is discussed during the consultation based on what works best for your family. Some families prefer care in their own home where their loved one is most comfortable. Others may prefer a different arrangement. We'll work together to find the right solution.
Rates are discussed during the consultation and are based on the level of care required, session length, and location. I want to ensure pricing is fair and transparent for your specific situation. Payment is accepted via e-transfer or cheque.
First, schedule a free in-person consultation using the booking form on this website (consultations are available 9AM-3PM Monday-Friday). During the consultation, we'll discuss your needs and create a care plan. Once we've agreed to move forward, you'll complete an intake form and then schedule your first respite session at a time that works for your family.
Session length is flexible and tailored to your needs. Whether you need two hours for a quick break or a full day of care, we'll discuss what works best during the consultation. Most families start with shorter sessions and gradually increase as everyone becomes comfortable.
Every session is personalized based on your loved one's interests and needs. We'll discuss their favorite activities, routines, and calming strategies during the intake process. I might engage them in play, crafts, walks, sensory activities, or simply provide quiet companionship—whatever helps them feel safe and content. My priority is always their safety, comfort, and dignity.
Yes. With 20 years of experience, I've worked with individuals who have a wide range of behavioral needs—including aggression, elopement, sensory meltdowns, and self-injury. I use calm, positive strategies and never use punishment or restraint. Your loved one's safety and dignity are always my top priority. We'll discuss specific behavioral concerns during the consultation so I can come prepared.
I can administer medications as directed and provide basic support for routine medical needs. More complex medical procedures may require additional discussion during the consultation. I'm First Aid and CPR certified and comfortable with emergency situations. If your loved one has specific medical needs, please mention them during booking so we can determine if I'm the right fit.
Life happens—I understand that plans change, especially when caring for someone with special needs. Cancellation policy will be discussed during the consultation and outlined in our care agreement. I aim to be flexible while also respecting everyone's time.
The first session is all about building comfort and trust. I'll follow the care plan we created, but I also understand that your loved one may need time to warm up to me. It's completely normal for them to be cautious or uncertain at first. I move at their pace, respect their boundaries, and use the strategies we discussed. After the session, I'll share how it went and we can adjust the approach as needed.
Once we've agreed to work together, I'll provide my direct contact information. During respite sessions, I'm always reachable by phone. In case of a medical emergency, I'll call 911 first, then contact you immediately using the emergency contact information from your intake form.
